I LOVE this Laptop!

As a point of reference: I have been a Computer Gamer since 1984, and I recently retired a couple of months ago.
My old Asus N73JQ-A2 served me well for the last three years, but after I retired, my 24/7 gaming fried it.
On to the review:
The Klipsch Speakers, and the included software are unbelievable. Volume is extra loud, Clarity beyond belief, and the stereo is so good I keep looking around to see what's behind me. (And that's no joke! I really have!) Volume control is done with function keys, which works quite well. Unlike my old Asus, there is no visual indication of the level while playing a DVD, or video.
On the unit's page here on Amazon.com, there is conflicting data (at the time of this writing) about the maximum screen resolution. In one location it says the max is 1920 x 1080 pixels, the others say 1600 x 900 pixels. It's 1600 x 900 pixels.
As to the picture quality, it's gorgeous. (I did have to adjust the gamma, brightness, and contrast to suit me, but that only took a few seconds.)
The DVD player, which is a slot in the side, can only be ejected using the function key + F4. What one would think to be an eject button above it is actually the Media Card Reader's protection plug inside the reader. Simply press on it, and it pops out. Quite a nice feature, actually, as I've often gotten gunk, or dust in mine, and had to use an air duster to clean it out on other laptops, and computers.
The Blue Tooth is already installed, and activated, upon arrival. It detected all of my neighbor's, a few I didn't even know about. It can be de/activated with a function command.
The Alienware Command Center allows you to get your Alienware 17 all spiffy looking. You can change the colors of 10 zones on the computer. There is an image of the command center on the Amazon page for reference. I've kinda set up an early warning system for my family, I set the "ALIENWARE" name, and the striping around the keyboard to flash red whenever I'm playing a game, and blue, when I'm not. Saves a lot on yelling. LOL!!! ;p
Heat. Unlike my old laptop, which I had to use with a cooling pad, and it still had hot spots all over the place, the Alienware 17 stays cool to the touch everywhere, even on the bottom. While playing 3 of the 5 MMO's I play, I can honestly say that I've only heard one of the cooling fans come on one time, and even then, for just a few seconds. Of course, with all of the weapons, yelling, and crashes, it could've been that I just didn't hear them.
The unit comes with software to do almost anything you could possibly want to do, even a hardware & software diagnostic program to test everything in it. You can even check to see if the battery is worn out, and needs to be replaced.
The Battery. There is no lever to pop it out. You have to remove the two screws at the back, on the bottom. (Not the two screws on the ID plate.) Then you push the whole bottom towards the front of the laptop. (It takes some effort.) Then, there's two screws and a connector holding the battery in. While in there, you can also add/change HDD's, memory, and from what I can tell, just about every component in there.
The Weight. The Alienware 17 weighs 9.2 lbs vs an equivalent Alienware 14's 6.1 lbs. But, for that extra 3.1 lbs, you get a much larger screen, an extra USB port, an extra cooling fan, a numeric pad, and 4 programmable gaming keys. If you're serious about gaming, this laptop is for you. If you need a desktop replacement that can do everything, this one is for you. If you need a laptop, but also need the upgradability of a desktop, this one is for you.

Awsome definietly worth it.

Great product, great shipping, fast service. definitely worth the price, it is worth 1500 and I got it on sale for $1200! What a steal..It is definitely worth the full price however and I couldnt be happier with this purchase. thank you alien ware for making such great gaming laptops i can run any game i wish on very high settings.

I have not tried the Alienware 17 yet, so I can only give four stars. But I have read a ton of great things about this computer and it's the gaming dream! I'm so excited to get my Alienware someday!
